Making Tax Digital, the history, in brief
April 2019 – This was the first stage of Making Tax Digital (MTD) and it was for VAT. This came into effect for the majority of VAT registered businesses abovethe VAT threshold (£85k) in April 2019.
Fast-forward to April 2021 – Digital compliance became mandatory in April 2021 for all those that fell into the scope.
April 2022 – For all remaining VAT-registered businesses full compliance to MTD for VAT came into effect in April 2022 (unless there was an HMRC approved exemption in place).
Making Tax Digital, where are we now?

Can I deal with MTD reporting myself?
We are hoping that many of our clients will be happy to embrace digital record keeping and MTD reporting. In the coming months we will be communicating with you further (make sure you are signed up to receive our monthly mailshots) and working with you to help in anyway possible.
However, for those that would rather leave it to us, we can do that too!
With a little over a year until the first taxpayers will have to join Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTD ITSA) this change presents new challenges for all taxpayers and how they interact with HMRC.
Not wanting to be too dramatic, but these changes are indeed the biggest shake-up to UK taxation in 30 years.
In this webinar we will take a detailed look at how we will be supporting our clients, as well as the new reporting requirements.
We will consider the the practical implications for all UK taxpayers, business owners, sole traders and landlords as well as the steps they need to take to get ready.
The webinar is aimed at all UK taxpayers as well as business owners, sole traders and property landlords.
The session will be hosted by Tim Humphries our Tax Partner and Katy Dunn a Partner in our Woburn office who is heading up RPGCC’s digital accounting service offering. This session will be pitched at a level where no prior knowledge of Making Tax Digital ITSA is needed.
What we will cover:
- What is the “2026 seismic tax shake-up” also known as MTD and why is it happening?
- The what does the MTD timeline look like? Which taxpayers are in and when.
- The MTD ITSA requirements – digital record keeping, quarterly reporting and year-end finalisation.
- Exemptions from MTD ITSA.
- How we can and will support you both now and in the future
- Your software, what are the options.
- Practical tips and pitfalls.
- What to do and when to get ready for April 2026.
